Fender neck code
Until 1962, the necks were manually dated.
Then they were stamped at the heel and the neck was given a code indicating which model it was intended for. This code is sometimes mistaken for a date. For example, I have a Telecaster that says "3 MRT 1973", so the number 3 does not refer to the day but to the type of neck.

From 1962 the width of the neck is indicated with a single letter. For most necks this was standard "B", only other sizes could be ordered on special request.
