Discoloration of paint
The discoloration shows where the plastic pickguard of this 1974 Stratocaster has been. The red on the part above the last 2 frets is paler next to the pickguard and partly even disappeared.
Also with this 1965 Jazzmaster, after disassembling the bridge, it is mainly the color red that has increasingly declined.
Removing the pickguard is not always necessary to see color differences. Find something that is easy to disassemble without problems. This also shows whether there is a repainted body.
A Music Man Saber that showed a light wood color in 1978 due to the transparent lacquer, has become darker / browner on the body as well as on the neck over the years. Basically just what you often see with transparent lacquered wooden furniture. The 1977 Stingray is clearly less discolored.
This 1979 Stratocaster Anniversary still has a beautiful silver layer. Don't be surprised when you come across one that now has a green tint.
Discoloration on both body and neck.
